Jacqueline Valenzuela as an artist
We’re bookending our first season with a solid close out. Jacqueline Valenzuela is a painter from East L.A deeply committed to the Los Angeles lowrider community. Focusing on the overshadowed history of women in lowrider culture, she creates work meant to magnify their importance and emphasize how their presence has influenced the scene at its core.
Using bold colors, portraiture, and the urban landscape she creates compositions that emphasize femininity in an otherwise designated male-dominated world. Her work combines the murals commonly seen in Latinx communities that focus on religion and social issues, with the erasure of women in the hierarchy of lowrider traditions.
