Jose Espinoza as an artist

We continue October with a look at Jose Espinoza and his Meso-american time machine in the contemporary. Using paint and sculpture, Espinoza imagines the ability to bring forth his ancestors, allowing them to witness what the future has evolved into. Using ancient and indigenous motifs, he’s able to connect his world with that of his past.

Espinoza uses his illustrative gifts as catalysts to research and explore his family’s culture. In the process he is able to expand his ideas regarding character design and storytelling. His stories are meant to emphasize the state of affairs from the Mexican immigrant perspective, while celebrating an often devalued people of strength and historical importance. While his work may also provide some levity to the conversation, it’s whole promotes an awareness and appreciation when in discussion.
